Six Months Ain't Long Six months ain't long for me to be gone Six months, six months ain't long Six months ain't long for me to be gone Oh darlin' six months ain't long Come all of my friends, wherever you may be And listen to my song You're all to see I'm in the wrong Cause all I've got's done gone If I'd been framed by an upright judge For six long months of time I'll do my best to make the test And darlin' I'll be home soon The judge he fixed the sentence here And the clerk he wrote it down Six months ain't long in the county jail For shootin' up this town

The sun in the morning, it inspires you to get up and take a drive You sip from a cup of coffee, too as the birds are all around outside The trees in the breeze, they shake and move the clouds stand still in the sky You at your desk watch the residue of too many thoughts collide The cup held in your hands will collect all the dew The smiles on faces shine as you are passing through The dream you move throughout won't let you slip away The world emerges and you don't know what to say The tires in the rain, they swish and swoon the noise in your head subsides The weight of the world won't smother you if you've got someone in whom you can confide in you can in you can confide in you can confide in you can confide

El Paso 04:07
I'm on the road to El Paso cuz' I ain't got no place left to go no place left to go Can't go back to Brooklyn it's been taken over by the rich man by the rich man but Oh, I could go back to you Oh, I could go back to you The road is open, fast and free there just ain't no other kind of living for me living for me No more work on the assembly line and anyway, a man can't survive working part time working part time but Oh, I could survive on you Oh, I could survive on you There's nothing left in Frisco Bay for a peaceful man who won't join the fray won't join the fray All I wanna do is move around with a girl like you to places where we can't be found places where we can't be found but Oh, I want a girl like you Oh, I want a girl like you Oh, I want a girl like you I want a girl like you

You Undo Me 04:12
I'm not excited by flight in a hot air balloon I'm not delighted by ice cream or sleeping til noon But one look at you and I smile like a goon Cause you undo me I don't get frightened when lightning strikes right by my room I'm not afraid of grenades or a cannonball boom But one look at you scares me shitless in doom Cause you undo me I thought I'd gotten better than to fall for one so tune-able But you let me forget it all by being so damn spoon-able Don't do much drinking cause it makes my thinking a mess I don't get high because usually I'd rather think less But I am addicted to you I confess, cause you undo me I'm not inclined to unwind or recline as I roam Little unravels the path of my travelin' home But when I'm with you, I unbuckle my bones cause you undo me You undo me
5.
Clara 06:07
Clara, Clara Don't you mind don't you mind They'll say things that are unkind but Never you mind no never you mind They'll say hurtful things to corrupt your goodness Don't you know they envy your benevolence, oh Clara Clara, oh you'll be just fine so don't you mind, no don't you mind Clara, Clara please don't cry no please don't cry I'm not, I'm not that guy who made you cry, who made you cry His heart never sinewed his mind's thoughts or words once He can't notice all your affection, oh Clara Clara, Clara you'll be just fine so don't you mind no, don't you mind Don't you ever mind things that are unkind Clara, Clara don't you cry cuz' you're beautiful Please don't, please don't you compare your face to theirs cuz' that's futile The magazines show you faces that are plasticized They don't show you beauty ain't qualified, oh Clara Clara, Clara please don't you cry cuz' you're so beautiful Don't you ever cry Don't you ever mind Don't you ever cry Don't you ever mind Don't you ever cry Clara, Clara, Clara

New Orleans 04:08
I saw the waters rage and run straight Over levees that had long since worn away So many days, so many ways wasted waiting For someone to step in and start saving Just seems like they don't care about New Orleans I saw the people dazed and dumbed, prey Stuck on bridges that led them neither way No matter what you say, or he say, or she say Somebody dropped the ball in a big ole' way Just seems like they don't care about New Orleans Oo, oo They don't care about New Orleans Oo, oo We saw them talking on TV saying Stuff 'bout our great democracy decaying Oo, the pursuit of happiness, and life, and liberty Our happiness was then truly apathy Just seems like they don't care about New Orleans Just seems like they don't care about New Orleans Oo, oo They don't care about New Orleans Oo, oo

Is there sound way up in Heaven? Your broken heart will heal only if you let it But if I'm not around Then who will hear the sound? You flung your love and hope at me From the other side of the big blue sea Well, I hope someday You get to see a pretty face Well, I've got to go now, I really do So please do what you've always wanted to Forgive yourself if you ever forget That a good joke is good medicine So when they find I'm not for real They'll all forget the reason that I steal It was just a part A character in my heart They came quite fast to shut it all down This Silly Dream that I once wrote about But in the end, someday I hope you see past the masquerade Well, I've got to go now, I really do So please do what you've always wanted to Forgive yourself if you ever forget That a good joke is good medicine I said my name was David and then I gave myself some brand new friends Named Drew, and Jane Bree, Camille, and Karen Well, I've got to go now, I really do So please do what you've always wanted to Forgive yourself if you ever forget That a good joke is good medicine Yeah, a good joke is good medicine It's good medicine Way up Way up in heaven Way up Way up in heaven

about

The Sun in Splendor is the love child of free jazz, newgrass, grunge rock, and Broadway musicals. The sole reason for creating The Sun in Splendor was the individual's attempt to realize (if only for a few moments) the full expressive potential of Spirit and is thus meant to be received however it is received.

The Sun in Splendor is a tumultuously happy marriage of songwriting and improvisation. As with all successful marriages, comprise is the key. At times, the song must sacrifice itself for the spirit of the moment. At other times, the spirit of the moment is subsumed by the power of song.

The Sun in Splendor was recorded in a basement in the mountains away from society, cities, scenes, circles, the music business, strip malls, skyscrapers, booking agents, and all that other crap. From this basement's window you can see pine forests in the distance with perfectly blue skies overhead. This window faces a quiet street with a little tree, home to a little family of squirrels who occasionally make not so quiet little squirrel conversation right in the middle of a perfectly good take of music. Damn those cute little bastards!

The Sun in Splendor contains seven songs: five composed by Mr. Purtill, and two covers. "You Undo Me" is a sublime tune written by Shaina Taub. Mr. Purtill's version is based on Benjamin Scheuer's arrangement. The second cover song is Mr. Purtill's arrangement of the bluegrass classic "Six Months Ain't Long" by Bill Monroe. This arrangement may offend the conservatively-minded appreciators of bluegrass music so traditionalists beware!

Lastly, The Sun in Splendor's cover design was done by the lovely Yulia Van Doren and the music was mastered by Toby Mountain at Northeastern Digital. Much additional love and gratitude goes out to the Purtill and Van Doren families, Elam Blackman at Constant Clip Records, Pablo Valero at Ayva Records, Montuno Publishing, and those squirrels outside the basement window for the intermittent entertainment.
